DIY CROPPED TRENCH COAT USING SIMPLICITY PATTERN #S8890

Ok this cropped trench coat by Mimi G Style Simplicity #8890 is aaaaamazing. I really didn’t think I would fall in love with it this much. But once I got it off the sewing machine and tried it on….. ahh heaven.

This was my first time making a coat and I must admit I have wanted to make jackets/blazers for ages. However I kept talking myself out of it, thinking I wasn’t ready and letting the fear of messing up hold me back. I really wish I hadn’t and started with jacket making a lot earlier because this by far has been my most enjoyable production.

If you are new to jacket making this is a great pattern to start with. Let me share a few points about why:

1. It features a raglan sleeve. This is really easy to put in compared to the traditional set-in sleeve.

2. It’s cropped. You don’t have to deal to with a lot fabric and it cuts the sewing time in half.

3. Its unlined.

The pattern instructions were very easy to follow. However, it its doesn’t instruct you to top stitch certain areas although acceptable leaves room for improvement. If you have the time and energy, I would advise top stitching the collar and lapels to give the garment a more professional look.

For the pattern I cut a size 18, a perfect fit for me. I used this gorgeous beige twill from MOODS, earthy brown buttons from JOANN and lined the flaps with light pink linen from my stash. I think this trench would be perfect in a lightweight denim and I’m looking forward to making it again once I find the perfect fabric.
