DIY Twill Striped Abaya
This is a self-drafted open abaya I made during Ramadan. I wore it for Eid and I absolutely adore it.
I used this fabulous twill from Measured Fabric which I’ve had my eye on for a while. Unfortunately, it’s now sold out but luckily I acquired the last few yards. One interesting discovery I didn’t recognize until I received the fabric was that the stripes run diagonally along the selvage edge instead of horizontal/vertically. l really loved this detail and it enticed me to play around with the placement of stripes. I decided to cut the cuffs on the bias so that the stripes run vertically in contrast to the placement of the stripes on the sleeves. The abaya was very easy to put together. As always, I like to spend time on finishing my garments to a professional standard, so I added a facing to the bodice and finished that facing with a Hong Kong seam.
The twill is on the heavy side but strangely enough, I still felt cool wearing it out this summer. I think this is due to the open weave nature of twill which allows air to past through it easily.
I am really enjoying adding this statement abaya to my wardrobe. Last year, I made this gorgeous one here and I am looking forward to adding more in bold prints and textures.
STYLED IT!
