DIY MAXI SHIRT DRESS

It’s been a tough week for a lot of us due to the #blacklifematter movement. I for one have felt very overwhelmed, sad and angry. I am praying for a better world for our children and that they don’t have to endure the harsh reality of racism with face today.

Today I am talking about this gorgeous maxi shirt dress. I believe they’re an essential modest wardrobe piece. It’s very similar to the abaya, as you can easily layer and style it as you wish. Unfortunately floor length shirt dresses are hard to come by without paying an arm and leg for it. This is where the beauty of sewing comes into play.  I was able to draft my own version using my measurements. Drafting your own patterns really isn’t that hard. If you have bodice slopper specific to your measurements then it’s easy to design whatever you please. For this particular shirt dress this, I opted for a loose fitting sleeve with pleats around the lower edge. I also added a hidden buttonhole placket. If you look back at my previous shirt dresses I’ve made you will see that this is a detail I love to incorporate now and again. I feel it give the garment are more seamless and clean look.

The fabric is a lovely linen/rayon blend from FABRIC.COM. They have a gorgeous array of colors in this collection. I was drawn to this light blue chambray, it was giving me springs/summer vibes.  I can’t wait to fill my wardrobe with few more of these shirt dresses. I am hoping to make it in heavy georgette and lightweight cotton blends soon.

STYLED IT!
