DIY KAFTAN TUTORIAL USING SIMPLICITY #8911

Hi lovelies,  kaftan are so easy to throw on and even easier to make. In this blog post I will be teaching you how to make this one using simplicity 8911 in 7 easy steps. You can follow along with me by watching the video below. I am using matte jersey from my fabric stash and I’ve have links to where you can purchase similar ones below. For a chance to be featured on the blog tag #mayademade with your beautiful version. I can’t wait to see what you make.

WRITTEN STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS & SUPPLIES

PATTERN: S8911

FABRIC: Matte Jersey similar one HERE & HERE

Normally with a knit fabric you will use a narrow zigzag stitch for seam. However since this is a kaftan and not a fitted dress, I will use a straight stitch and stretch the fabric a little as I go. I am also going to leave my seams raw.

PATTERN PIECES: 1, 2, 3, & 4

Step 1:  Cut out your fabric pieces

Step 2: Sew your shoulder seams

Step 3: Attach the sleeves. With right sides together, pin sleeves to the armhole edge. Matching center small dot at shoulder seam and then match remaining small dots. Sew between outer small dots making sure to back stitch at beginning and end.

Step 4: Sew underarm seams together. Pin underarm seams together matching small dots and notches.

Step 5: Sew side seams.  Starting at small dots where we stopped stitching the underarm seam. Make sure to back stitch at small dot sew all the way down pivoting at the outer corners.

Step 6: finish neckline. To form the casing press under 5/8” on the neck edge and press under 1/4 “ on the raw edge. Stitch close to the lower edge of the casing leaving an opening of 5/8” in the back to insert elastic.
Grab your elastic piece and insert through the casing and close back opening.

Step 7: Finish you sleeve hem and hem of your dress with 1” seam allowance. Press under the Hem on the lower edge of the sleeve. Stitch 1/4 “ from the raw edge and then again 1/4” below the first stitching line. Do the same for the Hem.

I hope to enjoy this sew along. Below are some pictures of how I styled mine with my black Chelsea books and large tote bag. Off course this kaftan would be perfect for summer and I already have plans to make another one. Although I am still undecided about what color I should make it in next but I am thinking tan or blues hues. what are your thoughts?
