9 TIPS FOR SEWING YOUR FIRST BLAZER.
Two weeks ago I debuted my first handmade blazer. You can find the blog post with all the juicy details HERE.
In today's post I am giving you a few lessons I learned from making that blazer.
1.Never skip making a muslin. It's essential that you test the fit of the pattern on your own body. There is too much work that goes into making a blazer to end up with something that doesn't fit properly.
2. Block fuse first (This is when you apply interfacing -edge to edge- onto a piece of fabric before the pattern pieces are cut out of the fabric) I didn’t do this and it was a long and tedious process having to interface and fuse each piece separately.
3. If it’s your first time making a blazer or tailoring anything, make sure to invest in a course to help you. I took Pam Howard’s Modern Jacket Techniques on Crafty and it was amazing. She gives clear step-by-step instructions on how to construct a beautiful blazer. You can find the course HERE.
4. Splurge on some good fabric. What excites me most about sewing is working with fabric that I absolutely love and looking forward to the finished project. It provides me the motivation I need to reach the finish line because let’s face it, tailoring can be a long process.
5. Interface, interface, interface. I won’t get into the pieces you need to interface here but I would say the most important parts are the front bodice, lapels, front facing, and upper and under collar bands. This really makes or breaks a good tailored jacket. That brings me to my sixth tip.
6. Make sure to use good quality interfacing. I found some HERE.
7. Take time to finish your blazer by hand. It really gives you a lot more control and a much neater and more beautiful finish on the inside. I know you can bag a hem with a machine, however, to me it’s not worth the blood, sweat and tears. I much rather take my time and finish it by hand.
8. Work in blocks of time and mentally plan what you're going to do during that time. This helped me work through and construct my blazer without getting stressed about time.
9. It’s a beautiful process. Enjoy it more than anything and take your time.
