HIJABIFIED DESIGNER LOOK.

DIY MAXI WRAP DRESS

So what is a hijabified designer look, you may ask?. This is where I take a design from an established designer and make modifications to make it hijab friendly.  I am hoping to make this a feature on the blog regularly.  I have a few pins on my Pinterest board with styles that are not so hijab friendly that I would love to try out.  I’ve had the wrap dress below by Anna Mason pinned in Pinterest for a while. The layered flounces on it is glorious and is actually what drew me to the dress.

I used two patterns to recreate this look. Mccall 7998 came pretty close to the original version, however, I didn’t care for the sleeves so decided to use the sleeves from Mccall 8036 instead. I lengthened the skirt portion by 4” so the flounces would hit just below my ankle. Thankfully the adjustments I made to the sleeves for my previous wrap dress for M8036 fit perfectly on the bodice of M7998. I loved the volume on those sleeves and didn’t see any point in drafting another design.

I choose a blue and white floral cotton poplin from MOOD.  I wanted something abstract and not obviously floral so this was an excellent match. It’s a gorgeous fabric perfect for this summer heat.

The bodice and upper skirt portion of the dress is fully lined. The fabric is very lightweight and sheer so this was a necessary step. I also finished the seams using French seams on the unlined portions of the dress, like the sleeves and flounces pieces. French seams are time consuming, but the results and luxurious feel is so worth it.

Overall, I really loved how the dress turned out. It’s giving me really strong Nigerian vibes and takes me back to my childhood days where every other weekend we would attend parties with aunties and uncles looking very vibrant in their African attire.
